We started Safe Harbor Schnauzer Rescue on January 15, 2007 after being given our first rescue by a couple going through bankruptcy.  We promised to find her a great home.  We then joined "Petfinder.com"and the phones started ringing.   In no time we had applicants coming from all over to meet our dogs.    Then we had the hard chore of selecting the right family for her.  We had to turn down a lot of very good ones who would have also made great homes, but this dog bonded instantly with this older couple, and we knew that they were the "ideal" family for her.  Later this same family asked us to find a companion dog for her which we did in just a couple of months.  Those dogs are doing great together.  They now have lots of grandchildren to play with and have such a wonderful family life.

Prior to starting this rescue organization we were part of the "Schnauzer Rescue of the Carolinas" when we lived in Anderson, South Carolina.  They are the largest Schnauzer Rescue organization in the country.  We began by becoming Foster Parents to a lot of dogs.  We then started helping with their administration, doing home visits, pulling dogs from pounds, and recruiting other volunteers.  We learned a lot about how the organization operated.  That experience led us to want to start our own rescue program when we relocated back to Ohio.

In 2007 we managed to rescue 24 beautiful dogs.  By the end of 2008 we had rescued and place over 85 dogs intotal.  In 2009 we raised our rescue total to over 126 dogs.   We had a wide variety of dogs from puppies to senior citizens.  All of them went to very loving homes and they all all doing very well.  We keep in touch with all our adoptive families.  One day soon, we hope to start a newsletter.  Who knows, they may know of someone either looking for a new dog or know if someone who needs to find a new home for one of their schnauzers.  We are always looking for more volunteers to help with fostering.  Please consider joining our group as a volunteer.  You can help us in so many ways!  You will meet so many wonderful people, care for a variety of teriffic dogs, and may even find one you have to keep for your very own.

We are now in the process of becoming Incorporated. Then we plan to apply for a 501(c)3 status as a publicly supported not for profit charity.  Then people can get tax credits for donations made to our organization.
